About Daniel

My name is Daniel Page, but you can call me Daniel or Dan. I was raised, married, and have lived for 30+ years in the RM of Springfield Manitoba, west of Oakbank in rural Sunnyside. I am your local Computer Science professor (PhD), where I presently work under my small educational multimedia business. While my profession as an academic has occasionally taken me elsewhere for work or schooling over the years, I always find myself back here, back home. Many of my fondest memories are living in this RM in Manitoba, and too, stay close to me. I hope for many to share that same feeling as we move forward, whether it be like me, being raised in this RM, perhaps are starting a family of their own, or been here for decades and helped make many of those memories possible.

My intentions to run for Council come from my commitment to improving our public institutions, freedom of expression, striving to protect the place I love, and to give back to the communities I grew up in. Beyond my experiences and what I bring to the table, I am inspired by the hard work and dedication of great people in this RM who were a part of my life and gave so much to make this the amazing place it is!

Daniel and his wife Charรฉn (pronounced like “Charlene”, without the “L”, she is used to it!), when they got married at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cooks Creek (2024). Daniel is sitting on a commemorative bench dedicated to his late Father, Mike Page (1956-2010). Mike Page contributed to his community, such as through his leadership as an early coordinator of the Springfield Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) and the Immaculate Conception Church.
Daniel being hooded by his doctoral supervisor, when he was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science, at the University of Western Ontario (Western). Fun fact, the title of doctor comes from the Latin docฤ“re, which means “to teach”. It is an academic distinction, in its historic and traditional sense. He is not a medical doctor, so don’t ask him to conduct surgery!

Demonstrable Values

Transparent and Serves the Public. How and when RM policy decisions happen remains difficult for everyday residents to easily access and navigate, causing unnecessary communication gaps. Daniel has spent years using his background documenting meetings in person, leveraging modern technology to share updates and video recordings with the public.

Community Supporting Community. Daniel volunteers also in the communities he belongs to, such as:

  • Member, Immaculate Conception Church, Cooks Creek. Various fundraising and/or community events over decades, e.g. 2024 & 2026 Medieval Festival, Pilgrimages.
  • Member, Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship (2018 – Current).
  • Chair/Judge, Western University Research in Computer Science conference (2016, 2017, 2019).
  • Councillor (2016-2017), Society of Graduate Students (Western).
  • Elected President (2009-2011), Computer Science Students Association (U of M).

Seeks Higher Public Standards, Challenging Censorship and Institutional Barriers. Civilly and respectfully challenged the recording ban imposed on the public by our RM. The application was supported by experienced, long-time residents and represented by constitutional lawyers at Charter Advocates Canada, as a matter of public interest, to support transparency.

Dedicated and Ethical. Daniel is dedicated to improving governance, speaking often as a delegate to Council. Some examples of public topics include:
